Internet Explorer 5.01 through 6.0 does not properly perform security checks on certain encoded characters within a URL, which allows a remote attacker to steal potentially sensitive information from a user by redirecting the user to another site that has that information, aka "Encoded Characters Information Disclosure."
The weakness was released 09/03/2002 by Liu Die Yu (Dieyu) as MS02-066 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-1186. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
Applying the patch MS02-066 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com.
