Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Samba 2.2.2/2.2.3/2.2.4/2.2.5/2.2.6 (File Transfer Software). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component DOS Codepage String Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in samba 2.2.2 through 2.2.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via an encrypted password that causes the overflow during decryption in which a DOS codepage string is converted to a little-endian UCS2 unicode string.
The weakness was disclosed 12/11/2002 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-1318. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/06/2025).
It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 13979 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : samba (MDKSA-2002:081)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 70044 (Sun Solaris Samba Server Security Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10683), Tenable (13979), SecurityFocus (BID 6210†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-1530†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
