Linux Kernel up to 2.4.19 Emulation Mode denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component Emulation Mode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The Linux kernel 2.4.20 and earlier, and 2.5.x, when running on x86 systems, allows local users to cause a denial of service (hang) via the emulation mode, which does not properly clear TF and NT EFLAGs.

The bug was discovered 11/06/2002. The weakness was presented 12/11/2002 by FIRST (Website). The advisory is shared for download at marc.info. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-1319. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 20 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12337 (RHEL 2.1 : kernel (RHSA-2002:263)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115052 (Red Hat Linux Kernel Denial of Service Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10576), Tenable (12337), SecurityFocus (BID 6115†), OSVDB (9589†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-7992†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
