Details
A vulnerability was found in Easy Software Products CUPS up to 1.1.17 (Printing Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function memcpy of the component HTTP Request Handler. The manipulation of the argument Content-Length/Chunked-Transfer-Encoding with the input value -1 leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) 1.1.14 through 1.1.17 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code by causing negative arguments to be fed into memcpy() calls via HTTP requests with (1) a negative Content-Length value or (2) a negative length in a chunked transfer encoding.
The weakness was published 12/26/2002 by zen-parse (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-1368. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11199 (CUPS < 1.1.18 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38160 (Multiple CUPS Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10909), Exploit-DB (22106), Tenable (11199), SecurityFocus (BID 6437†) and Secunia (SA7756†). Similar entries are available at VDB-19264, VDB-19266, VDB-19267 and VDB-19268. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
