A vulnerability was found in Easy Software Products CUPS up to 1.1.17 (Printing Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the file filters/image-gif.c of the component GIF Image Handler. filters/image-gif.c in Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) 1.1.14 through 1.1.17 does not properly check for zero-length GIF images, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via modified chunk headers, as demonstrated by nogif.
The weakness was disclosed 12/26/2002 by zen-parse (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.info. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-1371. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15069 (Debian DSA-232-1 : cupsys - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38160 (Multiple CUPS Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
