IBM AIX 4.3 RPC memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in IBM AIX 4.3. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component RPC Handler. Executing a manipulation can lead to memory corruption. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-1622. There is not any exploit available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX 4.3 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component RPC Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in certain RPC routines in IBM AIX 4.3 may allow attackers to execute arbitrary code, related to a "variable data type."

The issue has been introduced in 10/01/1997. The weakness was released 12/31/2002 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-1622 since 03/26/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1917 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Upgrading to version 5.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10112) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-21811†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
