A vulnerability was found in Check point Firewall-1 and VPN-1 up to 4.0 (Firewall Software). It has been rated as problematic. The design of the Internet Key Exchange (IKE) protocol, when using Aggressive Mode for shared secret authentication, does not encrypt initiator or responder identities during negotiation, which may allow remote attackers to determine valid usernames by (1) monitoring responses before the password is supplied or (2) sniffing, as originally reported for FireWall-1 SecuRemote.
The bug was discovered 09/03/2002. The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2002 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-1623 since 03/26/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 4.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
