A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mambo Site Server 4.0.11 (Content Management System). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file search.php. The manipulation of the argument Your name with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Mambo Site Server 4.0.11 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary script on other clients via (1) search.php and (2) the "Your name" field during account registration.
The bug was discovered 12/12/2002. The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2002 with Yandex as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-1662 since 05/19/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 19 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:search.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10936 (Mambo Site Server Account Registration HTML Injection Vulnerability).
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10859), SecurityFocus (BID 6386†), OSVDB (7511†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-13602†).
