Linux kernel before 2.6.15 allows local users to cause a denial of service (panic) via a set_mempolicy call with a 0 bitmask, which causes a panic when a page fault occurs.
The weakness was presented 01/04/2006 by Doug Chapman (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-3358 since 10/27/2005. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21977 (CentOS 4 : kernel (CESA-2006:0101)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117768 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2006:0101)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
