A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Microsoft Exchange 2000 (Groupware Software). This affects some unknown processing of the component Remote Procedure Call. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. Microsoft Exchange 2000, when used with Microsoft Remote Procedure Call (MSRPC), allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash or memory consumption) via malformed MSRPC calls.
The weakness was published 12/31/2002 by Dave Aitel with Immunity (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at online.securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2002-1873 since 06/29/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74123 (Microsoft Exchange 2000 Multiple MSRPC Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).
