astrocam.cgi in AstroCam 0.9-1-1 through 1.4.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in an HTTP request. NOTE: earlier disclosures stated that the affected versions were 1.7.1 through 2.1.2, but the vendor explicitly stated that these were incorrect.
The bug was discovered 11/03/2002. The weakness was released 12/31/2002 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-1874 since 06/29/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/01/2025). Earlier disclosures stated that the affected versions were 1.7.1 through 2.1.2, but the vendor explicitly stated that these were incorrect.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 58 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10901 (Astrocam Remote Command Execution Vulnerability).
