Microsoft Windows XP and Windows 2000, when configured to send administrative alerts and the "Do not overwrite events (clear log manually)" option is set, does not notify the administrator when the log reaches its maximum size, which allows local users and remote attackers to avoid detection.

The weakness was shared 12/31/2002 by Eitan Caspi as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at online.securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2002-1932 since 06/29/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91045 (Microsoft Windows 2000/XP Event Log Administrative Weakness).
