A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 1.3.23 (Web Server). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Log File Handler. Apache before 1.3.24, when writing to the log file, records a spoofed hostname from the reverse lookup of an IP address, even when a double-reverse lookup fails, which allows remote attackers to hide the original source of activities.
The bug was discovered 03/25/2002. The weakness was published 12/31/2002 by Martin (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2002-2103 since 08/05/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 281 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10579 (Apache Double-Reverse Lookup Log Entry Spoofing Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 1.3.24 eliminates this vulnerability.
