Apache HTTP Server up to 2.0.54 mod_ssl cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server (Web Server) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component mod_ssl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:

The Apache HTTP server before 1.3.34, and 2.0.x before 2.0.55, when acting as an HTTP proxy, allows remote attackers to poison the web cache, bypass web application firewall protection, and conduct XSS attacks via an HTTP request with both a "Transfer-Encoding: chunked" header and a Content-Length header, which causes Apache to incorrectly handle and forward the body of the request in a way that causes the receiving server to process it as a separate HTTP request, aka "HTTP Request Smuggling."

The weakness was disclosed 07/26/2005 by Marc Stern (Website). The advisory is shared for download at watchfire.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-2088 since 06/30/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 29 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21113 (HP-UX PHSS_34204 : HP-UX VirtualVault running Apache 1.3.X Remote Unauthorized Access (HPSBUX02101 SSRT051128 rev.1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117891 (CentOS Security Update for httpd (CESA-2005:582)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at httpd.apache.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 16218.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (21113), SecurityFocus (BID 14106†), OSVDB (17738†), Secunia (SA14530†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1014323†). The entries VDB-1651, VDB-1839, VDB-19745 and VDB-25654 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
