A vulnerability has been found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.0.55 (Web Server) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component HTTP Header Handler. The manipulation of the argument Transfer-Encoding with an unknown input leads to a unknown weakness. The Apache HTTP server before 1.3.34, and 2.0.x before 2.0.55, when acting as an HTTP proxy, allows remote attackers to poison the web cache, bypass web application firewall protection, and conduct XSS attacks via an HTTP request with both a "Transfer-Encoding: chunked" header and a Content-Length header, which causes Apache to incorrectly handle and forward the body of the request in a way that causes the receiving server to process it as a separate HTTP request, aka "HTTP Request Smuggling."
The weakness was released 07/26/2005 by Watchfire as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-2088 since 06/30/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21113 (HP-UX PHSS_34204 : HP-UX VirtualVault running Apache 1.3.X Remote Unauthorized Access (HPSBUX02101 SSRT051128 rev.1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117891 (CentOS Security Update for httpd (CESA-2005:582)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at httpd.apache.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
