Apache HTTP Server mod_ssl off-by-one

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apache HTTP Server (Web Server) (the affected version is unknown). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component mod_ssl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a off-by-one vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-193. A product calculates or uses an incorrect maximum or minimum value that is 1 more, or 1 less, than the correct value. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Off-by-one error in the mod_ssl Certificate Revocation List (CRL) verification callback in Apache, when configured to use a CRL, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (child process crash) via a CRL that causes a buffer overflow of one null byte.

The bug was discovered 07/26/2005. The weakness was shared 08/05/2005 by Marc Stern (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mandriva.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-1268 since 04/25/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 10 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21107 (HP-UX PHSS_34123 : Apache-based Web Server on HP-UX mod_ssl, proxy_http, Remote Execution of Arbitrary Code, Denial of Service (DoS), and Unauthorized Access (HPSBUX02074 SSRT051251 rev.2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117891 (CentOS Security Update for httpd (CESA-2005:582)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21567), Tenable (21107), SecurityFocus (BID 14366†), OSVDB (18286†) and Secunia (SA19072†).
