Apache HTTP Server up to 2.0.52 denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.0.52 (Web Server). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component HTTP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Apache webserver 2.0.52 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via an HTTP GET request with a MIME header containing multiple lines with a large number of space characters.

The weakness was shared 11/02/2004 by Chintan Trivedi (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securiteam.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0942 since 10/12/2004. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.

After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15740 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : apache2 (MDKSA-2004:135)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86683 (Apache 2.0.35-2.0.52 Memory Consumption Denial of Service and mod_ssl SSLCipherSuite Bypass).

Upgrading to version 2.0.53-dev eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at httpd.apache.org.Proper firewalling of is able to address this issue. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be applying a restrictive firewalling. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 11273.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (17930), Exploit-DB (613), Tenable (15740), SecurityFocus (BID 11436†) and OSVDB (11391†). The entries VDB-878, VDB-940, VDB-965 and VDB-1481 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
