A vulnerability was found in IBM HTTP Server 1.x (Web Server) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code of the component mod_include. Buffer overflow in the get_tag function in mod_include for Apache 1.3.x to 1.3.32 allows local users who can create SSI documents to execute arbitrary code as the apache user via SSI (XSSI) documents that trigger a length calculation error.
The bug was discovered 10/18/2004. The weakness was released 05/17/2005 by Crazy Einstein (echo) with IBM (Website). The advisory is shared at www-1.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0940 since 10/12/2004. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at securiteam.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15797 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86680 (Multiple Apache 1.3.32 and Earlier Web Server Local Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.3.33 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ibm.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3464.
