Details
A vulnerability was found in Cisco IOS up to 12 (Router Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component Cisco Discovery Protocol Logging. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Cisco IOS Web Server for IOS 12.0(2a) allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML by (1) packets containing HTML that an administrator views via an HTTP interface to the contents of memory buffers, as demonstrated by the URI /level/15/exec/-/buffers/assigned/dump; or (2) sending the router Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) packets with HTML payload that an administrator views via the CDP status pages. NOTE: these vectors were originally reported as being associated with the dump and packet options in /level/15/exec/-/show/buffers.
The bug was discovered 01/17/2006. The weakness was presented 01/18/2006 by Hugo Vazquez Carames (DiGiT) with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared for download at cisco.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-3921 since 11/30/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48991 (IOS HTTP Server Command Injection Vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12220 (Cisco IOS HTTP Service HTML Injection Vulnerability (cisco-sa-20051201-http)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cisco.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9203.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (23261), Tenable (48991), SecurityFocus (BID 16291†), OSVDB (21360†) and Secunia (SA18528†). See VDB-1991 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
