A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Cisco IOS up to 12.4 (Router Operating System). Unspecified vulnerability in Stack Group Bidding Protocol (SGBP) support in Cisco IOS 12.0 through 12.4 running on various Cisco products, when SGBP is enabled, allows remote attackers on the local network to cause a denial of service (device hang and network traffic loss) via a crafted UDP packet to port 9900.
The bug was discovered 01/18/2006. The weakness was released 01/19/2006 with Cisco (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at cisco.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0340 since 01/20/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20744 (Cisco IOS MMP Stack Group Bidding Protocol (SGBP) Crafted UDP Packet Remote DoS (CSCsb11124)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO, running in the context l and relying on port 161. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43105 (Cisco IOS SGBP Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability (cisco-sa-20060118-sgbp)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cisco.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
