Details
A vulnerability was found in PostgreSQL up to 7.2.1 (Database Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation of the argument TZ/SET TIME ZONE as part of a Environment Variable leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflows in the (1) TZ and (2) SET TIME ZONE enivronment variables for PostgreSQL 7.2.1 and earlier allow local users to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code.
The weakness was published 01/17/2003 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at debian.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2002-1402. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15002 (Debian DSA-165-1 : postgresql - buffer overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19160 (PostgreSQL TZ Environment Variable Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (11079), Tenable (15002), SecurityFocus (BID 6613†), Secunia (SA8034†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-1802†).
