Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP Terminal Server memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Terminal Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the RPC Locator service for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition, Windows 2000, and Windows XP allows local users to execute arbitrary code via an RPC call to the service containing certain parameter information.

The bug was discovered 10/31/2002. The weakness was presented 01/30/2003 by David Litchfield with Next Generation Security Software as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-0003. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is available at immunitysec.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 83 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11212 (MS03-001: Unchecked buffer in Locate Service (810833)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 70034 (Microsoft Windows Locator Service Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (MS03-001)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 4754. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2393.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (11132), Exploit-DB (5), Tenable (11212), SecurityFocus (BID 6666†) and OSVDB (7117†). See VDB-82, VDB-332, VDB-333 and VDB-427 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
