A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0/2000/XP (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Terminal Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the RPC Locator service for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition, Windows 2000, and Windows XP allows local users to execute arbitrary code via an RPC call to the service containing certain parameter information.
The bug was discovered 10/31/2002. The weakness was presented 01/30/2003 by David Litchfield with Next Generation Security Software as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-0003. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is available at immunitysec.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 83 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11212 (MS03-001: Unchecked buffer in Locate Service (810833)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 70034 (Microsoft Windows Locator Service Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (MS03-001)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 4754. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2393.
