A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Apple Quicktime Streaming Server 4.1.2 (Multimedia Player Software). This affects some unknown processing of the file parse_xml.cgi of the component Administration Server. The manipulation of the argument filename with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in parse_xml.cgi in Apple Darwin Streaming Administration Server 4.1.2 and QuickTime Streaming Server 4.1.1 allows remote attackers to insert arbitrary script via the filename parameter, which is inserted into an error message.
The weakness was disclosed 03/07/2003 by Ollie Whitehouse with @stake as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-0053. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11278 (Apple QuickTime/Darwin Streaming Server Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11347 (Apple QuickTime/Darwin Streaming Server Parse_XML.CGI Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2085.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (11404), Tenable (11278), SecurityFocus (BID 6958†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-1302†).
