A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple Quicktime Streaming Server 4.1.2 (Multimedia Player Software). Apple Darwin Streaming Administration Server 4.1.2 and QuickTime Streaming Server 4.1.1 allows remote attackers to execute certain code via a request to port 7070 with the script in an argument to the rtsp DESCRIBE method, which is inserted into a log file and executed when the log is viewed using a browser.
The weakness was presented 03/07/2003 by Ollie Whitehouse with @stake as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0054. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11278 (Apple QuickTime/Darwin Streaming Server Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11368 (Apple QuickTime/Darwin Streaming Server Malicious Port Request Code Injection Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
