Details
A vulnerability has been found in NetBSD up to 1.6 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component TIOCSCTTY ioctl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-192. Integer coercion refers to a set of flaws pertaining to the type casting, extension, or truncation of primitive data types. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
NetBSD 1.4 through 1.6 beta allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel panic) via a series of calls to the TIOCSCTTY ioctl, which causes an integer overflow in a structure counter and sets the counter to zero, which frees memory that is still in use by other processes.
The weakness was disclosed 09/16/2002 by David Laight (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ftp.netbsd.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-1490. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
