NetBSD up to 1.6 TIOCSCTTY ioctl integer coercion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in NetBSD up to 1.6 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component TIOCSCTTY ioctl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer coercion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-192. Integer coercion refers to a set of flaws pertaining to the type casting, extension, or truncation of primitive data types. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

NetBSD 1.4 through 1.6 beta allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel panic) via a series of calls to the TIOCSCTTY ioctl, which causes an integer overflow in a structure counter and sets the counter to zero, which frees memory that is still in use by other processes.

The weakness was disclosed 09/16/2002 by David Laight (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ftp.netbsd.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2002-1490. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (10115), SecurityFocus (BID 5722†) and OSVDB (7566†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
