A vulnerability was found in Cisco VPN 5000 Client up to 5.2.7 on Linux/Solaris (Network Encryption Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function close_tunnel/open_tunnel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. Buffer overflows in the Cisco VPN 5000 Client before 5.2.7 for Linux, and VPN 5000 Client before 5.2.8 for Solaris, allow local users to gain root privileges via (1) close_tunnel and (2) open_tunnel.
The bug was discovered 09/18/2002. The weakness was shared 04/02/2003 by Niels Heinen (Website). The advisory is available at cisco.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2002-1492.
