Details
A vulnerability was found in Sun Java JRE up to 1.5.0 (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component API Reflection Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Unspecified vulnerability in Sun Java JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 3 and earlier, SDK and JRE 1.3.x through 1.3.1_16 and 1.4.x through 1.4.2_08 allows remote attackers to bypass Java sandbox security and obtain privileges via unspecified vectors involving the reflection APIs, aka the "first issue."
The weakness was presented 02/08/2006 by Adam Gowdiak with Security Explorations (Website). The advisory is shared at sunsolve.sun.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0614 since 02/09/2006. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20921 (GLSA-200602-07 : Sun JDK/JRE: Applet privilege escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115435 (Oracle Java Runtime Environment Multiple Privilege Escalation Vulnerabilities).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at java.sun.com. A possible mitigation has been published 1 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4317.
