A vulnerability has been found in IBM Lotus Notes up to 7.0.1 (Groupware Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component Mail Title Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. The LDAP server (nldap.exe) in IBM Lotus Domino before 7.0.1, 6.5.5, and 6.5.4 FP2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a long bind request, which triggers a null dereference.
The weakness was presented 02/10/2006 by Jakob Balle with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is available at secunia.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-2712 since 08/26/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20890 (Lotus Domino LDAP Server Crafted Packet Remote DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38529 (IBM Lotus Domino LDAP Server Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at www-1.ibm.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
