A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows up to 10 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Media Player. Heap-based buffer overflow in the bitmap processing routine in Microsoft Windows Media Player 7.1 on Windows 2000 SP4, Media Player 9 on Windows 2000 SP4 and XP SP1, and Media Player 10 on XP SP1 and SP2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted bitmap (.BMP) file that specifies a size of 0 but contains additional data.
The bug was discovered 02/14/2006. The weakness was shared 02/14/2006 by Marc Maiffret with eEye as MS06-005 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-0006 since 11/09/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90297 (Windows Media Player Remote Code Execution (MS06-005)).
Applying the patch MS06-005 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 5712. In this case the pattern BM is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4157.
