A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows Server 2003/XP (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component TCP/IP IGMP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Microsoft Windows XP SP1 and SP2, and Server 2003 up to SP1, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (hang) via an IGMP packet with an invalid IP option, aka the "IGMP v3 DoS Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 02/14/2006 by Douglas Nascimento with Datacom as MS06-007 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-0021 since 11/30/2005. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
