A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 2000/Server 2003/XP (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block of the component Media Player. The manipulation as part of a EMBED Tag leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the plug-in for Microsoft Windows Media Player (WMP) 9 and 10, when used in browsers other than Internet Explorer and set as the default application to handle media files, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via HTML with an EMBED element containing a long src attribute.
The bug was discovered 02/14/2006. The weakness was shared 02/14/2006 by John Cobb (iDefense) with iDEFENSE as MS06-006 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-0005 since 11/09/2005. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2189 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20906 (MS06-006: Vulnerability in Windows Media Player Plug-in Could Allow Remote Code Execution (911564)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90296 (Windows Media Player Plug-in with Non-Microsoft Internet Browsers Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS06-006)).
Applying the patch MS06-006 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 5710. In this case the pattern EMBED is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3988.
