Perl up to 2.16 Rijandel CBC Encryption Crypt::CBC cleartext storage

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Perl up to 2.16 (Programming Language Software). Affected is the function Crypt::CBC of the component Rijandel CBC Encryption Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cleartext storage vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-312. The product stores sensitive information in cleartext within a resource that might be accessible to another control sphere. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

Crypt::CBC Perl module 2.16 and earlier, when running in RandomIV mode, uses an initialization vector (IV) of 8 bytes, which results in weaker encryption when used with a cipher that requires a larger block size than 8 bytes, such as Rijndael.

The bug was discovered 02/23/2006. The weakness was shared 02/27/2006 by Lincoln Stein (Website). The advisory is shared for download at search.cpan.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-0898 since 02/25/2006. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1555.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21096 (GLSA-200603-15 : Crypt::CBC: Insecure initialization vector), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at search.cpan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24954), Tenable (21096), SecurityFocus (BID 16802†), OSVDB (23513†) and Secunia (SA20899†). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
