Sun MySQL up to 5.0.18 Logging Remote Code Execution

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Sun MySQL up to 5.0.18 (Database Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component Logging. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

MySQL 5.0.18 and earlier allows local users to bypass logging mechanisms via SQL queries that contain the NULL character, which are not properly handled by the mysql_real_query function. NOTE: this issue was originally reported for the mysql_query function, but the vendor states that since mysql_query expects a null character, this is not an issue for mysql_query.

The bug was discovered 02/25/2006. The weakness was published 02/27/2006 by 1dt.w0lf (Website). The advisory is shared at rst.void.ru. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-0903 since 02/27/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21179 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : MySQL (MDKSA-2006:064)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117705 (CentOS Security Update for MySQL (CESA-2006:0544)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at mysql.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (24966), Exploit-DB (27326), Tenable (21179), SecurityFocus (BID 16850†) and OSVDB (23526†).
