A vulnerability was found in Microsoft SQL Server 7.0/2000 (Database Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component Named Pipe Handler. Microsoft SQL Server 7, 2000, and MSDE allows local or remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (crash or hang) via a long request to a named pipe.
The weakness was disclosed 08/27/2003 by Andreas Junstream with @stake as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-0231 since 04/30/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in C++. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11804 (MS03-031: Cumulative Patch for MS SQL Server (815495)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90086 (Microsoft SQL Server Multiple Vulnerabilities (MS03-031)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
