GnuPG up to 1.4.2.1 Signed File

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in GnuPG up to 1.4.2.1. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Signed File Handler. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:

gpg in GnuPG before 1.4.2.2 does not properly verify non-detached signatures, which allows attackers to inject unsigned data via a data packet that is not associated with a control packet, which causes the check for concatenated signatures to report that the signature is valid, a different vulnerability than CVE-2006-0455.

The bug was discovered 03/09/2006. The weakness was disclosed 03/10/2006 by Tavis Ormandy (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.gnupg.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-0049 since 12/28/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21098 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : gnupg (MDKSA-2006:055)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117739 (CentOS Security Update for GnuPG (CESA-2006:0266)).

Upgrading to version 1.4.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at gnupg.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25184), Tenable (21098), SecurityFocus (BID 17058†), OSVDB (23790†) and Secunia (SA19287†). The entry VDB-2058 is pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
