A vulnerability was found in GnuPG up to 1.4.2.1. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown function of the component gpgv. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:
gpgv in GnuPG before 1.4.2.1, when using unattended signature verification, returns a 0 exit code in certain cases even when the detached signature file does not carry a signature, which could cause programs that use gpgv to assume that the signature verification has succeeded. Note: this also occurs when running the equivalent command "gpg --verify".
The bug was discovered 02/15/2006. The weakness was presented 02/15/2006 by taviso with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is available at lists.gnupg.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-0455 since 01/27/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20938 (GLSA-200602-10 : GnuPG: Incorrect signature verification), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117739 (CentOS Security Update for GnuPG (CESA-2006:0266)).
Upgrading to version 1.4.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at gnupg.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
