A vulnerability classified as critical was found in SANE up to 1.0.10. This vulnerability affects the function SANE_NET_INIT of the file saned.conf of the component saned. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. saned in sane-backends 1.0.7 and earlier does not check the IP address of the connecting host during the SANE_NET_INIT RPC call, which allows remote attackers to use that call even if they are restricted in saned.conf.
The bug was discovered 09/11/2003. The weakness was released 09/22/2003 by Alexander (Website). The advisory is shared for download at debian.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0773 since 09/10/2003. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
