Summary
A vulnerability was found in SANE up to 1.0.10. It has been declared as problematic. This issue affects the function malloc of the component saned. The manipulation results in memory allocation.
This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0775. There is no available exploit.
It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in SANE up to 1.0.10. Affected is the function malloc of the component saned. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
saned in sane-backends 1.0.7 and earlier calls malloc with an arbitrary size value if a connection is dropped before the size value has been sent, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption or crash).
The bug was discovered 09/11/2003. The weakness was presented 09/22/2003 by Alexander (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2003-0775 since 09/10/2003. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15216 (Debian DSA-379-1 : sane-backends - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115026 (Red Hat SANE Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (13157), Tenable (15216), SecurityFocus (BID 8600†), OSVDB (11777†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-9935†).
