Details
A vulnerability was found in University of Minnesota gopherd up to 3.0.5. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple buffer overflows in UMN gopher daemon (gopherd) 2.x and 3.x before 3.0.6 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a long filename as a result of a LIST command, and (2) the GSisText function, which calculates the view-type.
The weakness was published 10/06/2003 by Vade 79 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at debian.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0805 since 09/18/2003. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15224 (Debian DSA-387-1 : gopher - buffer overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 3.0.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (12605), Exploit-DB (22893), Tenable (15224), SecurityFocus (BID 8167†) and OSVDB (10194†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
