A vulnerability was found in GNU lsh Daemon 1.4. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file read_line.c/channel_commands.c/client_keyexchange.c. lsh daemon (lshd) does not properly return from certain functions in (1) read_line.c, (2) channel_commands.c, or (3) client_keyexchange.c when long input is provided, which could allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a heap-based buffer overflow attack.
The weakness was released 10/06/2003 by Carl Livitt as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0826 since 09/19/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18153 (Debian DSA-717-1 : lsh-utils - buffer overflow, typo), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
