A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Wordperfect Converter (Word Processing Software) (the affected version unknown). It has been rated as critical. Buffer overflow in Microsoft Wordperfect Converter allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via modified data offset and data size parameters in a Corel WordPerfect file.
The weakness was published 09/03/2003 by Yuji Ukai as MS03-036 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-0666 since 08/07/2003. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by valgasu and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110023 (Buffer Overrun in Microsoft Office 2000 WordPerfect Converter (KB824993)).
Applying the patch MS03-036 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2407.
