Details
A vulnerability was found in X.org X11 up to 1.0.2 (Windowing System Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Command Line Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
X.Org server (xorg-server) 1.0.0 and later, X11R6.9.0, and X11R7.0 inadvertently treats the address of the geteuid function as if it is the return value of a call to geteuid, which allows local users to bypass intended restrictions and (1) execute arbitrary code via the -modulepath command line option or (2) overwrite arbitrary files via -logfile.
The weakness was presented 03/21/2006 by Daniel Stone with X.org Team (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.freedesktop.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0745 since 02/17/2006. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21114 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : xorg-x11 (MDKSA-2006:056)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xorg.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25341), Exploit-DB (1596), Tenable (21114), SecurityFocus (BID 17169†) and OSVDB (24000†). See VDB-83617 for similar entry. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
