Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in webfs 1.17/1.18/1.19/1.20. This affects an unknown functionality of the component Header Field Handler. The manipulation of the argument hostname with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in webfs before 1.20 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via .. (dot dot) sequences in a Hostname header.
The weakness was presented 11/17/2003 by Jens Steube (Website). The advisory is shared at debian.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-0832 since 09/26/2003. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15229 (Debian DSA-392-1 : webfs - buffer overflows, file and directory exposure), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86583 (Webfs HTTP Server Information Disclosure Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 1.20 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (13309), Tenable (15229), SecurityFocus (BID 8724†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-4440†). See VDB-20974 for similar entry. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
