Linux Kernel up to 2.6.16 rndis.c OID_GEN_SUPPORTED_LIST numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.16 (Operating System). This issue affects some unknown processing of the file rndis.c. The manipulation of the argument OID_GEN_SUPPORTED_LIST with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in the do_replace function in netfilter for Linux before 2.6.16-rc3, when using "virtualization solutions" such as OpenVZ, allows local users with CAP_NET_ADMIN rights to cause a buffer overflow in the copy_from_user function.

The bug was discovered 03/22/2006. The weakness was shared 03/22/2006 by Shaun Tancheff (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0038 since 12/20/2005. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22639 (Debian DSA-1097-1 : kernel-source-2.4.27 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115389 (Linux Kernel Unspecified Socket Buffer Handling Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 2.6.16-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25400), Tenable (22639), SecurityFocus (BID 17830†), OSVDB (25232†) and Secunia (SA19330†). The entries VDB-2098, VDB-2177, VDB-28521 and VDB-30059 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
