Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Ethereal up to 0.9.15 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is an unknown code of the component SOCKS Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in Ethereal 0.9.15 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via the SOCKS dissector.
The bug was discovered 11/03/2003. The weakness was presented 12/01/2003 (Website). The advisory is available at distro.conectiva.com.br. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2003-0927 since 11/05/2003. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 28 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15244 (Debian DSA-407-1 : ethereal - buffer overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115029 (Red Hat Ethereal Code Execution and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (13578), Tenable (15244), SecurityFocus (BID 8951†), OSVDB (2752†) and Secunia (SA10531†).
