RealNetworks RealPlayer up to 10.5 MBC File memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2005-2922. Additionally, an exploit exists. A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in RealNetworks RealPlayer up to 10.5 (Multimedia Player Software). Affected is some unknown processing of the component MBC File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the embedded player in multiple RealNetworks products and versions including RealPlayer 10.x, RealOne Player, and Helix Player allows remote malicious servers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a chunked Transfer-Encoding HTTP response in which either (1) the chunk header length is specified as -1, (2) the chunk header with a length that is less than the actual amount of sent data, or (3) a missing chunk header.

The bug was discovered 03/22/2006. The weakness was released 03/23/2006 by John Heasman, Greg MacManus and Sowhat (iDefense) with iDEFENSE Labs (Website). The advisory is available at service.real.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-2922 since 09/15/2005. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21140 (RealPlayer for Windows < Build 6.0.12.1483 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115346 (RealNetworks Multiple Products Multiple Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at service.real.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12361.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25409), Tenable (21140), SecurityFocus (BID 17202†), OSVDB (24062†) and Secunia (SA19358†). Further details are available at service.real.com. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-2104, VDB-2105, VDB-26954 and VDB-26947.
