A vulnerability was found in HP HP-UX up to 11.22 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file rexec. The manipulation of the argument -l with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in rexec on HP-UX B.10.20, B.11.00, and B.11.04, when setuid root, may allow local users to gain privileges via a long -l option.

The bug was discovered 04/29/2003. The weakness was released 12/31/2003 by Davide Del Vecchio (AliG) as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-1097 since 03/11/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack.
