Cisco LEAP Authentication Mechanism improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Cisco LEAP (affected version unknown). It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Authentication Mechanism. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Cisco LEAP challenge/response authentication mechanism uses passwords in a way that is susceptible to dictionary attacks, which makes it easier for remote attackers to gain privileges via brute force password guessing attacks.

The weakness was published 08/03/2003 by Joshua Wright as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-1096 since 03/11/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/18/2024).

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published 9 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k.

It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (12804), Exploit-DB (23212), SecurityFocus (BID 8755†) and OSVDB (15209†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
