BRS Webweaver up to 1.0.6 HTTP Request User-Agent memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in BRS Webweaver. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component HTTP Request Handler. The manipulation of the argument User-Agent with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in BRS WebWeaver 1.06 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via an HTTP request with a long User-Agent header.

The bug was discovered 11/01/2003. The weakness was released 12/31/2003 by D4rkGr3y with SecurityLab.RU (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-1165 since 05/04/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 60 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86602 (BRS WebWeaver httpd `User-Agent` Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (13571), Exploit-DB (23325), SecurityFocus (BID 8947†), OSVDB (18855†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-5866†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
