A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in HTTP Commander 4.0. Affected is some unknown processing of the file Openfile.aspx/Html.aspc. The manipulation of the argument file with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in (1) Openfile.aspx and (2) Html.aspx in HTTP Commander 4.0 allows remote attackers to view arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the file parameter.
The bug was discovered 11/06/2003. The weakness was disclosed 11/06/2003 by LINUX (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2003-1166 since 05/04/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11448 (HTTP Commander Directory Traversal Vulnerability).
